Hiking the trails of Petroglyph National Monument, we came across this amazing glyph. From left to right I’ve dubbed them: Flat Head, Dick Head, Thunderbird Man, and Ghost Man.
This is a pictograph, an ancient painting on rock, not a petroglyph which is carved into the rock. We were drawn to Heuco Tanks State Park with the promise of beautiful pictographs. The interpretation of this petroglyh is of a bighorn sheep stuck with arrows. Were they thanking the gods for a propitious hunt or were they petitioning for success for upcomings?
I’ve seen similar glyphs near the Moab area but they had a head. There may be a faint outline of a head but I can’t quite tell.
