This is typical of the width of the streets in old Varanasi. Most tower a few stories into the sky so, at most, a gaunt band of light enters giving the feeling of walking during twilight. There is barely enough room for two to walk side by side yet the locals seem to be able to squeeze many more people and animals through the narrow channels. We had to turn sideways to navigate still bodies were constantly rubbing against others seeking to pass. It was slightly uncomfortable for Westerners used to greater personal space.
