Carved elephants were a common sight at both Ajanta & Ellora caves which is not surprising since Elephant is deemed a holy animal in both Hinduism and Buddhism. These were on adjacent sides to the Cave 16 entryway. I put two images together because I was not able to get a picture that included both in one shot. I find it interesting that these two are kneeling. It is something I did not see until working with these pictures today. It makes me wonder if they were sentinels guarding entrance to the cave or were they worshippers of Lord Buddha.
