Monochrome Monday: There BUT for the Grace of God…

Man Sleeping At Status

One of my mom’s favorite sayings growing up was, “There but for the grace of God go you.” which she uttered when seeing someone in unfortunate conditions. As I got older, I became troubled by the phrase. Would a loving God really withhold his grace from someone casting them into misfortune? It’s an act that just feels petty. He was born a pure and beautiful child without a blemish on his soul. Why would God choose him to not be a recipient of grace? Is this passed out drunk man being punished for the sins of his parents? Or is it simply a series of choices that led him to this moment?  I am uncomfortable being associated with a God that impose petty choices on his flock.
