I am an early riser so am in the city long before my work day begins. I sit at the Daley Center on the steel tables with the umbrellas and journal or people watch or take pictures or all three. I find it is a great way to set the stage for my upcoming day.
For the entire first two weeks, I saw this gentleman sitting there too. He sometimes eats a bowl of cereal, sometimes drinks coffee, always has a smoke. One day I saw him listening to music on a cassette-based walkman. I’m surprised those still exist.
One day I saw him writing. I walked by his table as I was heading to the office and was amazed at his script. Not amazed because a man that looks a little down on his luck had good penmanship. Amazed because, for anyone, it was elegant, flowing, uniform, artistic in its flair.
