My grandson and I headed out to the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago for a day of aquatic animal viewing. The highlight of the day was undoubtedly petting the sting rays. We put our hands into the shallow pool and rubbed our hands over their bodies as the swam past. Their skin feels silky.
As much as I love seeing animals and, even more exciting, petting them, I am conflicted with the concept of confining animals to prison cells. I understand there is a need to preserve the genetic material so endangered animals don’t go extinct but what kind of a life is it when vast open ranges are reduced to a small percentage of what the species has evolved to inhabit?
