Washington St in Chicago was recently redesigned to more effectively accommodate the combined car, bus, & bicycle traffic. I will admit that it looks much nicer than many other Chicago streets and, from a cyclists point of view, I love the protected lanes on the right. However, the goal of smoothing traffic did not pay dividends. The same amount of cars must fit into less lanes resulting in the busses moving at a slower rate than before the redesign. I guess the laws of physics are not a component of the decision making process of the politicians. Still, I am happy as a cyclist for the two or three times I will use this road over the next year.
