The furthest we ventured from our hotel was to Banteay Srey about 22 miles (37km) from our hotel. By tuk tuk that translates into an hour. This temple is built from a reddish sandstone and was built for the Hindu god Shiva.
We went to Banteay Srey directly from the Angkor Wat sunrise so reached before many tourists had arrived. When we came to a roped off section deep into the temple, a guard asked me if I wanted the VIP tour and raised the rope and motioned me to enter. Having traveled through many points in Asia, I knew the VIP treatment would not be free. The tour cost me a token of appreciation amounting to US $5. It was money well spent for I was able to get close to many of the delicate carvings for which this temple is famous.
