Monastery Candles

Monastery Candles

This picture was taken at the Monkey Temple in Kathmandu, Nepal. I was inside the temple following a ceremony replete with drums, chanting, and an offering of food. Buddhists believe that the flame on the candles represents the light of Buddha’s teachings.

Buddha says “Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.” He also says, “Just as a candle cannot burn without fire, men cannot live without a spiritual life.”
