Sri Lanka, being a very proud Buddhist country, is home to many Stupas. This very old stupa resides in the ancient city of Polonnaruwa. Today, the city is an important archeological site boasting many ruins and artifacts. As is required at most Buddhist sites, I removed my shoes prior to setting foot on the sacred ground for my clockwise walk around the massive structure. The day was very hot and very humid so I had to be careful to place my footsteps in the shadows and on light colored rock. Sadly, all of the little shrines surrounding this stupa had suffered desecration at the hands of thieves.
This was the 2nd largest stupa I encountered in Asia, the largest being in Kathmandu, Nepal.
