The second sitting Buddha at Gal Vihara is secured behind a cage. It’s the smallest of the bunch at 4 feet high. The cage has not been constructed to keep the Buddha in…or…depending upon perspective to keep visitors out. I have been given two explanations. One I received verbally at that site and is that there is believed to be riches hidden in the Buddha and people will steal the statue. The other I have read which says the cage is there to protect some tiny, very faded frescoes needing protection. Personally, I like the mystery of hidden treasures. What I don’t like is the thought of Buddha in prison.
