Sitting Buddha at Gal Vihara

Sitting Buddha #1

Gal Vihara in the sacred city of Polonnaruwa (a word I never did learn to pronounce) is home to four large Buddha statues exquisitely carved from a single rock face. The city is part of the cultural triangle in central Sri Lanka. The left most Buddha is this one depicted in the Lotus position. It is approximately 15 feet high.

The color striations in the rock add an incredible accent of natural beauty to the beauty inherent in the carved images. I am also impressed with the carvings beneath his sitting place. Another great detail is contained in the little houses near the top. In each of the four windows is carved a Buddha identical to the primary Buddha.

I love the serenity in the Buddha’s face.
