Monks in Training

Young Monks

I was surprised to see such young boys training to be Buddhist monks during my visit to the Kopan monastery. Here, children as young as 7 are allowed to be part of the community in training to become Buddhist monks or nuns. In the West, one enters training for the priesthood following the completion of 12 years of education. This group of boys were relaxing in the relative quiet and cleanliness of an area of verdant plants and colorful flowers. Here, they are posing for pictures being taken on an iPad.

I went to the Monastery store to see if I could purchase one of the robes for casual wear around my home. Unfortunately, the robes were not an item stocked for sale.
