Candle Tenders

Candles are a staple of Buddhist temples. For Buddhists, the flame on the candles represents the light shed by Buddha’s teachings. The nun and monk pictured here attended some of the many candles in the temple area. They used simple tools to remove spent candles from the tray and insert new, as yet unlit, candles into the vacancy. The candle light created a constant warm flickering light. One of Buddha’s sayings associated with candles is:

Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.
