The Lungi

Men in Lungis

The South of India is a different world than the North of India. The people in the South speak a different language, Tamil Nadu, and tend to dress more traditionally than many of the Northerners. The lungi is a sarong, a swath of material wrapped around the waist which is frequently worn in regions where the heat and humidity create an unpleasant climate for trousers. I bought a Lungi in Madurai but have, as yet, not worn it outside of my hotel in Madurai. This is because my Western biases leave me feel like I am wearing a skirt.
