Traditional Nepalese Hat

The men of Nepal are commonly seen in their traditional headwear. It is not ubiquitous but it is fairly common particularly amongst the older generations. I wonder at the purpose behind these hats because they don’t shade the eyes from the sun and they don’t seem to cover enough of the head to provide warmth. I came to the unsupported conclusion that they are primarily worn for tradition. I just wish I knew the source of that tradition.

I sought out a vendor and an attempted to buy one to add to my collection of traditional items purchased in their native lands. I found a street vendor who was going to give me a great price because I was his first customer of the day. Unfortunately, none of his stock would properly fit my oversized head.
