Pillars of Civilization

Giant Columns

Giant Columns

I am much more fascinated by ancient architecture than I am by modern. Both are amazing engineering feats for the time so, for me, it’s not a matter of better or worse. It’s simply a matter of preference. I prefer to experience the handmade pillars of craftsman over the machine built infrastructure of buildings. The thought of an artisan sweating over a large piece of rock with a hammer and chisel is magical. In this picture, Irene stands in front of the two tallest pillars we saw in all of Turkey. The diameter of the base of these columns was in the vicinity of 6 feet.
