Wat Pho Offering Bowls

The Wat Pho Reclining Buddha temple has 108 bronze bowls, one for each of the auspicious characters of Buddha. People either bring or purchase 108 coins inside the temple then, while walking toward the exit, drop a single coin into each of the bowls which is supposed to bring good fortune to the donor. The sound from the lines of people dropping coins is rich and, at times, rhythmic. Every so often, one of the temple attendants brings another bucket to collect the coins. The collected coins are brought back to the purchasing point where they are separated into 108 coin bundles for purchase. And so the cycle continues the entire day. The money is used to help the monks support the wat (temple).
