Meenakshi Temple North Gate

Meenakshi North Gate

Meenakshi North Gate

I went to Madurai solely to see the Meenakshi Amman Temple also referred to as Temple City, a huge temple complex in one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world. Here we are approaching the North Gate one of four gates with these brilliant towers. The beauty of this gate was beyond words. The sheer number of carved images was wonderous.

The temple one of the few great temples honoring a female is dedicated to Meenakshi. The complex complex houses many images, an estimated 33,000 and has many corridors. Upon entry, we had to check in our shoes and our cameras. Inside, we were only allowed to take photos with our cell phone cameras which, in this day and age, approaches the quality of handheld cameras. Inside there were also sections for Hindu’s only so we could not take in all the extraordinary beauty.
