Zakir The Tabla Maestro

Zakir Hussain

Zakir Hussain

I was first introduced to Indian music in 2006. Since then, I have grown to appreciate many of the unique sounds of the various Indian classical styles. My preference is for those that are more upbeat. The most recent concert I attended was a percussion concert featuring instruments from the Western world, North India, and South India. Each style had their own individual mini concert. Zakir represented the North with an amazing tabla improvisation. His hands moved so fast they were a blur to my eyes. The concert closed with all three styles playing together. It was truly an amazing event.

There is a tradition in India that the student touch the feet of the teacher. However, in a turn of events, Zakir, the headliner of the event and world renowned master touched the feet of all those in the concert with him. It was truly the action of a humble man.

  1. I have had the fortune of meeting Zakir Hussain in person, after attending one of his concerts in Houston. Undoubtedly, he is one of the best musicians in India. However, he is also one of the most charming and the coolest celebrity.
